A terrarium is more than just a decorative glass container filled with plants. It is a small, living ecosystem that brings a touch of nature into your home. One of the best things about a terrarium is that it requires very little maintenance compared to ordinary houseplants. With just a little attention throughout the year, your miniature landscape can stay healthy, vibrant, and beautiful for many years.

Caring for Your Terrarium During Summer

Summer brings longer days and warmer temperatures, which encourage plants to grow more actively. During this season, the most important thing is to protect your terrarium from direct sunlight. Although the glass looks beautiful in a sunny window, intense sunlight can quickly heat the inside of the container, creating temperatures that may damage delicate plants and moss.

Choose a bright location with indirect natural light. If your terrarium receives too much sun, simply move it a little further away from the window.

Pay attention to moisture levels as well. A closed terrarium naturally recycles water through condensation. If you notice heavy water droplets covering the glass all day, open the lid for a few hours to allow excess moisture to escape. On the other hand, if the soil and moss begin to look dry and there is no condensation for several days, lightly mist the terrarium with clean water. Remember, a terrarium needs surprisingly little water, and overwatering is one of the most common mistakes.

Removing any yellow or dead leaves will also help keep the ecosystem healthy and prevent unwanted mould.

Caring for Your Terrarium During Winter

Winter is a quieter season for your terrarium. Plants naturally slow their growth as daylight becomes shorter, meaning they require even less care than in summer.

Place your terrarium where it can still receive plenty of natural daylight, but keep it away from radiators, fireplaces, or other heat sources that can dry the air and disturb the balance inside the glass. Sudden temperature changes should also be avoided.

Watering is rarely needed during winter. Before adding any moisture, always check the soil first. If it still feels slightly damp, there is no need to water. In a healthy closed terrarium, the natural water cycle often provides all the moisture your plants need for weeks or even months.

Take a few moments every now and then to enjoy your terrarium. Watching new leaves appear, tiny roots develop, or moss slowly spread across the landscape is part of its charm.

With the right balance of light, moisture, and occasional care, your terrarium will continue to thrive through every season. It is a living reminder that nature doesn't always need a large space to flourish—sometimes, an entire little forest can grow peacefully inside a single glass container.
